To install UnixBench, access your system as root, and run the following commands:

Download tests such as this are an approximate, although generally reliable, method of testing download speed.

One of the most simple utilifies is df, which will display basic information about the server’s filesystem. Run the following command:

df -h

For a “bigger picture” view of the server’s physical devices and partitions, fdisk is useful:

fdisk -l

The output of this command will show you both physical devices, and how they are partitioned, with an overview of disk space usage.

1. On Windows, open Command Prompt. (Mac OS X and Linux users can open Terminal.)
2. Type the following command, including your server’s IP address: ping -t 0.0.0.0

If the server is online and responsive, you will see results returned quickly, with specific readings for each successful “ping.” If the server is offline, you will see slow responses like “Request timed out” or “Could not reach destination host.”
